Project Title

Context Effects and Spoken Word Recognition of Chinese: An Eye-tracking Study

Principal Investigator Dr Yip, Chi Wing Michael

Area of Research Project
Psychological Studies

Project Period
From 01/2014 To 12/2015
Objectives
  • To examine the relationship between context effects and the processes of spoken word recognition of Chinese
  • To unfold the time-course of the cognitive processing of spoken word recognition and sentence processing of Chinese
  • To critically examine the lexical, non-lexical factors as well as their interaction that affect the spoken word recognition and sentence processing of Chinese
  • To search for cross-linguistic evidence to illuminate the processing of lexical ambiguity resolution
  • To contribute to the understanding on the cognitive processing of Chinese spoken word recognition
Methods Used
A standard psycholinguistic experiment (listen-and-look task) is designed to collect eye-movement data by using a head-mounted eye-tracking machine
Summary of Findings

In this project, we will expect to collect a pool of real-time behavioral data (by using eye-tracking equipment) to generally support the context-dependency hypothesis in the area of spoken word recognition.

Impact

The expected impact of this research project is twofold:

Theoretically, the research findings will clarify the underlying psychological mechanism of spoken word recognition and the cognitive processes of sentence processing from a cross-linguistic perspective. In addition, the experimental results obtained from the eye-tracking equipment will bolster the robustness of the scientific support of either hypothesis on spoken language processing.
Practically, the research findings can form the basis for constructing and developing the computational model to simulate human speech processing; for example, the parameters of spoken word recognition and sentence processing as well as the algorithm of spoken language processing.
